Ayer Mitt Romney dijo algo que un político nunca debe decir: «I like being able to fire people» (me gusta poder despedir a gente). La frase suena horrible, por mucho que esté tomada fuera de contexto y Romney estuviera diciendo algo relativamente razonable. Aún así, como señala James Fallows, esta es la clase de metidas de pata retóricas que acaban por hacer daño a un candidato a largo plazo:

It’s the word fire. I have fired people, and I have been fired — and there is no comparison in how much more excruciating the former process is. I know, agree with, and have even written a book about all the reasons why «flexibility» in the labor force is a good thing for companies and for the overall economy. People need to be held accountable for good or bad performance. (…).

But people with any experience on either side of a firing know that, necessary as it might be, it ishard. Or it should be. It’s wrenching, it’s humiliating, it disrupts families, it creates shame and anger alike — notwithstanding the fact that often it absolutely has to happen. Anyone not troubled by the process — well, there is something wrong with that person. We might want such a person to do dirty work for us. (…) We might value him or her as a takeover specialist or at a private equity firm. But as someone we trust, as a leader? No – not any more than you can trust a military leader who is not deeply troubled when his troops are killed.

Como señala Fallows, esta es la clase de pifia verbal que acaba por perseguir un candidato porque refuerza una sospecha previa de los medios y votantes. Mitt Romney es este übercapitalista que se ganó la vida comprando y «reciclando» empresas, a veces hasta llevarlas a la bancarrota; un tipo frío y calculador que quizás disfrutaba un poco demasiado con ello. No importa que no estuviera diciendo eso, igual que John Kerry realmente no voto a favor de algo antes de votar en contra. Este comentario (igual que «corporations are people«) van a perseguir a Romney si llega a las generales.

Lo más divertido de todo esto, sin embargo, es quién está dirigiendo la carga de revolucionarios socialistas indignados: Newt Gingrich.

You have to ask the question, is capitalism really about the ability of a handful of rich people to manipulate the lives of thousands of people and then walk off with the money?

Que le den una tienda de campaña en Puerta del Sol ahora mismo, vamos. Decir algo parecido en el partido republicano hace tres meses era motivo para deportarte a MSNBC.  El tipo está en modo kamikaze algo serio; es una lástima que sus números en las encuestas sea poco menos que lamentables y su campaña probablemente no pase de febrero. La dinámica de la campaña no ha cambiado, y esta clase de ataques o pifias en unas primarias republicanas no son demasiado peligrosas, pero Romney se está complicando la vida de cara a las generales él solito.

Esta noche, New Hampshire. Veremos cómo sale Romney de ello, y si la extraña (e imprevista) resurrección de John Huntsman acaba en algo más serio. Queda partido.
